The Learning Community is designed with built-in support services from faculty and staff members with the intent to build a lasting bond between students while they go in-depth into specific topics relevant to and of interest to them.

Join the Fall 2024 cohort by completing the steps below:

    1. Identify as Black/African, Black/African American or Black/African Diasporic (globally dispersed/worldwide) and/or interested in and willing to commit to learning from Black/African perspectives, experiences and diverse cultural lens’.
    2. Complete the application here
    3. Enroll in ENGL 100 F and COUN 151 F using the CRN numbers provided after completing your application.

1. What is the difference between the Umoja Learning Community and the Umoja Scholars Program?

– In the Umoja Learning Community, students take courses together and share a learning environment, fostering a sense of community and support. On the other hand, students in the Scholars Program receive similar benefits, such as dedicated counseling and academic support, but they do not take courses together. Both programs aim to enhance the educational experiences of Black/African American students and those interested in learning from diverse cultural perspectives.

2. What if I’m committed to another learning community already?

– If you’ve already committed to another learning community, we encourage you to consider joining the Umoja Scholars Program instead. We want what is best for the student, and the Scholars Program offers similar benefits tailored to your needs without the commitment of taking the ENGL 100 and COUN 151 courses.

3. Who is eligible to apply for the Umoja Learning Community cohort?

– The Umoja Learning Community is open to Black/African American students or those interested in and committed to learning from Black/African perspectives and experiences. Students who have not taken ENGL 100F or 101F and COUNS 151F are eligible to apply.

4. How do I apply for the Umoja Learning Community cohort?

– To apply, simply click on the provided QR code on the attached flyer. The priority deadline for applications is 11:59pm on June 14, 2024.

5. What are the benefits of joining the Umoja Learning Community cohort?

– Benefits include enrollment in English and Counseling courses, access to a dedicated Umoja Counselor, English Professor, and English Tutor, a bookstore voucher, specialized events, and a sense of belonging within the community.

6. What if I’ve already passed ENGL 100 or 101 and COUNS 151? Can I still join the Umoja Community Program?

– If you’ve already completed these courses and would like to join as an Umoja Scholar, you can complete the application on our Umoja Website https://umoja.fullcoll.edu/

7. Will the Umoja Learning Community cohort meet in person or online?

– The cohort will meet in person throughout the semester for ENGL 100F and COUNS 151F.

8. How will the Umoja Learning Community cohort support me academically?

– The community offers built-in support services from faculty and staff members dedicated to enhancing the educational experiences of Black/African American students. This includes personalized support from counselors, professors, and tutors.

9. Are there any additional requirements or commitments for joining the Umoja Learning Community cohort?

– While there are no additional academic requirements, students are encouraged to actively engage with the community and commit to participating in specialized events and activities designed to deepen their understanding of Black/African perspectives and experiences.

10. What if I have scheduling conflicts with other courses?

– Please schedule an appointment with a counselor for assistance in resolving scheduling conflicts. We will do our best to accommodate your needs.
